ABOUT BAYGANDA
Our Story
During a visit to Uganda in 2004, we discovered an urgent need to help educate children left in turmoil by a combination of an ongoing war and the AIDS epidemic. We found the number of children without families overwhelmed the educational system of Uganda, and many of them were unable to attend any type of school. Those who did attend school found themselves in little more than wooden shacks with no supplies and under-educated teachers. Most of the children were suffering from illness and malnutrition, and the child death rate at one school alone was forty children a year. We also recognized a great need to support Ugandan girls, who faced immense challenges that impacted their well-being, safety, and future.
With roots in the Bay Area and a deep desire to transform lives in Uganda, we began sending a team to the village of Bugolobi in 2007 to teach the art of sewing to girls. In the United States, BayGanda has been an innovative leader in Bay Area sewing camps since 2005, while also filling a need for accessible summer programs in the urban community. Today, BayGanda continues to support girls with their academic and creative aspirations, helping to raise up a generation of empowered, enriched, and economically secure young women.
