The problem
In Uganda, only a tenth of children between 3 and 5 years old are enrolled in school.
Out of that tenth, only 25% of the girls graduate from middle school.
Only 4% of those girls make it to college
This is due to poverty, which forces them into early marriage and domestic work, as well as cultural norms that devalue girls' education.
“Uganda’s education system is not government-funded, parents must pay high prices for admission and the teachers are not properly trained.”
-Ananias Ssemusu, Principle of Kingdom Junior School

Our Programs
The Bay and Uganda born out of deep compassion for girls. For 20 years, we have empowered girls to create through the art of sewing in the Bay Area and expanded access to education for them in Uganda. Our mission has always been girl empowerment—paving the way for future changemakers
Bayganda
We provide early childhood education for Ugandan children—prioritizing girls while supporting all children in need. We foster holistic development of the mind, body, and spirit by encouraging a play-based learning approach that honors culture, community, and curiosity.
Sew What
Through the art of sewing, we educate girls of color and gender-expansive youth to confidently embrace who they are and live empowered lives—mind, body, and spirit.
